Templates Overview

The templates function will be useful to you if you often have to take the same kind of measurements and want to export these in a tabular form for further use. As there are plenty of use cases for this, you can define your own template for your specific use case. Applications for this are, for example:

  • You want to compute the wall area of buildings or rooms, e.g. for painting. To this end, you need to measure the walls, and subtract the window and door areas. The output should be a table detailing the area calculation.
  • You are processing floor-plans and have to list the rooms and their areas. Additionally, you have to take into account that some floor areas have to be summed with a correction factor (e.g. a balcony only counts as half the area).
  • You want to fabricate curtains and hence have to collect the sizes of all windows together with the height they are mounted in the wall and the space on each side.
  • You are doing inspections of objects distributed over the city. Hence, you want to take pictures, place text notes in them and make a list of all places, with notes and GPS coordinates, linked to a map.
  • You are producing posters or signs and have to record where to mount them and at which sizes to print them for each place.
  • You are selling second-hand shirts and are taking pictures of them, together with sizes like, e.g. sleeve lengths. Exporting the data into a spreadsheet helps you do the inventory.

All of these can be done with the templates function and you will probably find other ways how you can make use of collecting data through templates.

Tutorial: Measure Wall Area

This tutorial describes how you can use the Area Sum template to measure the wall areas of buildings excluding window and door areas. Topics covered:

  • Select a template
  • Mark walls and windows
  • Assign tags to measurements
  • Export measurements into a data table
This tutorial also has an accompanying text version.

Tutorial: Create Custom Template

If you want to generate data tables for your custom use case, you might have to create a custom template. This tutorial describes this for the example application for measuring the size and position of windows on the room wall. Topics covered:

  • Create a new template
  • Specify the custom tags for template
  • Define a data table layout
  • Measure the images and assign tags
  • Add image notes to be included in the data table
  • Export measurements into a data table
  • Copy image templates with the clipboard to quickly add all required measures to the image.
